These pieces are created on wood from Oahu’s Waimea Valley, which is the highly revered Valley of The Priests. I am reusing wood they have culled that might otherwise go to waste. This work is truly a collaboration between myself and the wood. I find my composition in the wood grain, and use the natural lines to define details of each piece. I sometimes spend weeks hand sanding these pieces, so I grow very familiar with the intricacies of the wood. They range from 2 to 4 inches thick and have the majority of their bark still intact. I am blessed to create with such a beautiful natural resource.

One of these trees might be made of any combination of materials including Acrylic or Oil paint, various stains, spray paint, charcoal, pen, pencil, and prismacolor pencils, along with collage of different types of paper and wood. I love the idea of creating trees on wood panels. It is always an interesting puzzle to make the different elements work in harmony.

Gallery Three- Dot Paintings

I love making these pieces because of the process involved, which is always fun for me to get lost in. I start off building a highly textured background by making formations in wet paint and adding layers of collage. The next step is to create my background color which will dictate the tone of the final painting. Before I start working on the dots, I have to determine their spacing and layout. Painting the first dot always begins with choosing which color i feel will play off the background the best. The color of each dot is subsequently created based on the colors of the closest dots around it. I love this process because it feels like a game to balance all the colors while being therapeutic and meditational at the same time.These pieces have been shown on TBS movie and a makeover, and ABCs Extreme Home Makeover. The dot paintings have been included in a variety of art auctions and fundraisers. I have also had the opportunity to work on these dot paintings with classes of Autistic children which was a remarkable experience each time.
